Introduction

There are a plethora of golf training aids on the market. Today I’ll walk you through the second of the four main ones I use during my coaching sessions

Impact Ball

Although the impact ball was invented primarily to promote a “connected swing” I’ve adapted its use. Here is a simple but effective way of exploring 3 things:

  1. Weight transfer
  2. Release
  3. Balance

Many golfers, especially high handicappers, are obsessed with “hitting the ball” rather than “swinging the club”. This leads to tension, a lack of weight shift (maybe even recoiling backwards like a cannon) and limited or no clubhead release.

Firstly make a golf swing and hold the finish, be aware of where your weight is. Were you able to hold the finish position or did you lose your balance? Note where your hips and chest are pointing; at the target or to the right of target? Did the weight come off your back foot?

Next simply throwing the impact ball (in the guise of a golf swing) to another person to say, 10 yds away, this should lead to an instinctive weight shift towards the target and release of the ball.

Let go too soon and the ball goes to the right of target, hang on too long and it misses left. The hands “release” the ball in a neutral position; i.e. hands either side of the ball rather than one below the other. They also finish in a similar neutral position.

You can try this with a football too – the basic principles are the same.

When you’ve thrown the ball, hold your position and be aware of where your weight is. It should be about 80% on your target leg (left leg for right-handers) and you should be up on your back toe showing a clean pair of heals

Your chest, hips and belt buckle should be facing the target. Given this is where you want the ball to go it makes sense to face the target after impact.
